What difference will you make this year?
I came across a poem written by a workaholic dad that I wanted to share with you:
I have a son who is five years old,
a boy so very fine.
When I look at him,
it seems to me that all the world is mine.
But seldom do I ever see
my son awake and bright.
I only see him when he sleeps.
I'm only home at night.
When I come home so weary
in the darkness after day
My wife then says to me,
you should have seen him play.
So I stand beside his bed
and I look and I ponder there
And I wonder if he's dreaming
"Why isn't daddy here?"
I met a man this week who was working at my neighbor's house. He walked across the street and said,
"I will never be the same after reading your book, The Difference a Father Makes. I was laughing one moment and crying the next. I
never knew
how important it was for me to be there for my son and love him."
"My dad worked all of the time and was never there for me. He never had any time to play with me or go to my hockey games. As a matter of fact, I seldom got home before 10 p.m. myself when I became a dad. I knew that I wasn't a good dad, but I didn't know how to change. Your book gave me hope and I have missed too much of my son's life. I am going to do the things in your book and give myself to being a part of his life even though my dad wasn't there for me."
That is the reason we do this ministry. ...
So my question to you is:
What difference are you going to make this year?
Are you ready to make a difference that lasts beyond your life. Your kids, and those you influence, could be the history writers of your
legacy
.
I have included some of Bill Cosby's chilling comments on the responsibility of fathers, and I would love to
hear from you
about what God is doing through your life as you raise up your kids.
If you like this newsletter, be sure to
forward it
on to other moms and dads who would be encouraged by its contents. Our mission is to speak life into men and women and help them
catch the Smile of God
over their lives so they can make a difference with their kids and the orphans they meet.
Coaching Moment: Becoming a Man
In
this Coaching Moments video
, Ed shares about how our endless struggle to name ourselves as men will always end up as a futile one--and where our real name should come from.
Giving the Gift of You
Know:
While we may think that spending all our time at the office so we can buy things our kids will enjoy and appreciate is a good idea, the truth of the matter is, what your kids really want more than anything is you.
Learn:
Proverbs 1:8
says, "
Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching." (NIV)
Do:
If you aren't taking time to speak into your kids' lives and give them instruction, someone else will. This New Year, make part of your gift to your kids, you. Ask them what they would like to do for a "day with dad," and go do it with them. You'll be delighted to discover that it will probably be their favorite part of the whole year.
Comedian Bill Cosby is still laughing these days, but he's got a message that is more sobering than funny: the woeful increase of fatherlessness in our nation. But Cosby isn't pining away about it--he's using a platform that he once held for entertaining audiences, to now challenge dads to fulfill their duties as fathers.
Cosby had some great advice
last year as he spoke in front of the Connecticut state house.
The most chilling statement he made was that if dads don't step up, the onus will be on the public school system to instill the necessary values to help turn our society back around. Ouch! That should challenge all of us!
Here's a letter I received from a dad who attended one of our recent conferences:
"Ed, I was called out at the men's retreat and became a man and a father. I know God arranged Sunday night so I could now call out my son. To stand there and affirm him and call him to be a man changed my life. I have been so caught up in only trying to get my kids to perform, and now I know that my first and most important job is to love and affirm them."
