“And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’”

(Gal 4:6 ESV)

It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over

Singer and musician Lenny Kravitz recently opened up to a reporter about his faith and the final weeks of his relationship with his dad. His father, Sy Kravitz, was a non-religious Jewish man who, following a bitter divorce, had little to do with his family.. In the final few weeks of his life, Sy repented of his sins, accepted Christ, and salvaged what he could of his relationship with his two daughters and son. As a result, Lenny made this hair-raising statement:

"The last three weeks of his life was the best relationship I had with him. And it cancelled out the 40 years before." In the midst of his pain years before, Lenny crafted the words to one of his more famous songs, "It Ain't Over Til It's Over":

“So many years we've tried, And kept our love alive, Cause baby it ain't over 'til it's over."

Here was a young man, lost without the blessing of his father and full of questions about his father’s leaving and being estranged from his family. All those feelings of bitterness and disappointment disappeared when Lenny’s father asked his children for forgiveness and spoke life over them. He finally caught it--and Lenny caught it, too. I have met so many fathers, like Lenny’s, who learned the power of their words.

It's a powerful reminder for us that it's never too late to begin setting things right in our relationship with our own children. God’s arms of grace are far-reaching and ever waiting for a sweet embrace.

Go for it Mom and Dad, It ain’t over til it’s over!

Coaching Tips

Know: You have great power in the words you say and the way you say them!
Learn: “Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit—you choose.” (Prov 18:21 MESSAGE)
Do:
C
elebrate your children as they make steps towards their dreams.

Help your children build structures that support their dreams.

Affirm your children every day with what you love about them most.

Make time to be there and give them your smile.
Pronounce your blessings over your children with affection and the words “I believe in you”.
Ask: Ask yourself this question? What would my children’s life be like if I spent most of my time speaking about what I love about them and their dreams, and not what is broken in them?

“I do not believe in a fate that falls on men however they act;
but I do believe in a fate that falls on them unless they act.”
G.K. Chesterton, English author

My Prayer For You

“Father, I pray that you would keep our hearts open to speak life into our kids this month. Give us words that release our kids and not hinder them. Open my kids to knowing and experiencing the same smile that you gave your Son. That they would fulfill the destiny you have made each of them for. And bring healing and restoration to every kid who has left home and lost his way. I’m waiting on the porch the way you waited for my return when I was lost. In name of Jesus. Amen!”
